Oban 1999
IN'T DIVING BRILL??

John Harvey

Dive Officer's Log

Arrived at Tralee Bay, Oban at 21.00 Friday 12th March '99 to find the most amazing lodges. They were fully equipped with everything a diver could ask for. And the weekend began!!

Saturday 13th March

The day started fine with boat in water and everyone kitted up and raring to go! Then things started to go wrong as Dave (D.O.) forgot to put his undersuit on and had to go back for it! Finally everyone was ready on the boat and we set off! 100 yards offshore the propellor packed up! We got back to dry land and returned to the lodges feeling very dejected! The general consensus was that we try to see what Andy at Alchemy diving could do for us!

The afternoon things brightened up! We dived the SS Breda with no other divers about. The viz was good although the sealife was a little sparse. A good wreck dive and first sea dive. Stan Harris (aka Stan Haggis) tried his hand at being a polaris missle from 26 m to 12 m in 4 seconds – his buddy Tanya was not impressed!!!

Sunday 14th March

We hit the Sound of Mull with a vengence! The first dive of the day was on the wreck of the Shuna, all nine divers plus Dick Halcroft (SAA) were set to dive when we found somone had pinched the shotline, however, Andy was prepared for this and made one! Once under the water the viz was 8 – 10 m and the sealife was in abundance! Pollock, wrasse, squat lobster and crabs and a v nice looking sunburst starfish!

Lunch was taken at Loch Aline as Andy had arranged the burger bar to be opened for us - we also had to get a fill. Nice venison burgers – well recommended.

The Thesis was the 2nd dive of the day. Starting from 10 m and dropping to a slope at 35m. Time and depth were short due to the short surface interval but a good dive and plenty to see!

The weekend, on the whole, was excellent dive to the friendliness of the local people and the 'togetherness' of the Club members. I would recommend this trip to divers old and new alike!
