The Lunesdale Story

The Lunesdale Sub Aqua Club is a UK BSAC branch, situated in the northwest of England, drawing its membership mainly from the Lancaster, Morecambe and Lune Valley area, but also with members from as far afield as Warrington and Ireland. It was formed in April 1961 - in answer to a request by the Sports Council to BSAC. Members from BSAC's Blackpool branch trained prospective divers at Lancaster's Kingsway baths over the winter of 1960/1961. Three members of that club were founding members of the Lancaster and Morecambe BSAC branch - from which was born the Lunesdale Sub Aqua Club.

Currently the club has about 60 diving members, ranging from trainee club divers to advanced grades. We organise local dives on most weekends, as well as club trips to diving sites in the UK and abroad. Whilst the emphasis and philosophy of the club are very much centred on diving, the club puts a great deal of effort every year on training divers from novice grades through sports and dive leader grades, up to advanced diver level.

As well as all the basic equipment needed to train new divers the club has its own RIB, the Lunesdale Diver, which was purchased with the aid of a Sports Council grant (and a lot of hard work of one member!). This is used on club trips at sites around the country.
